Late getting to the hives this week
The weather here in the Florida Panhandle has been pretty wet for the last 3 days and the bees were stuck at home, so I didn't bother them until this afternoon. Both hives are looking very strong with very tight brood patterns and lots of eggs and larvae as well. The bees have been busy with the fall nectar flow with Goldenrod, Aster, and Spanish Needle going strong, and Brazilian Pepper about to start. I have been feeding sugar syrup, but I'm going to take a break from that for a bit and see how they do with just gathering. Nectar flow may be down for a couple of days due to the rain, but I still saw a lot of pollen on gatherers in both hives. The extra frames that I added in both hives are 60-70% drawn out now and I'm hoping they get finished out in the next week or two.
Right now we're expecting a tropical storm/hurricane late in the week (yikes!), so time to strap every thing down, even though the bee yard is relatively protected on the edge of the wooded area behind my house.
During the bad weather, I took some time to inspect my bee suits and I found a couple of small holes on one of them. I had bought some iron-on bee patches a while back on a whim so I used them to cover the holes. I didn't iron them on, because I didn't want to damage the other mesh, but I have some heavy duty glue that came in my suit repair kit, so I used that to glue them on. We'll see how well it holds up. I wore it today, so far, so good. I'm not sure how well they'll withstand the next wash though.
Colleen says I need to get some small flower 🥀patches now to add with the bees 🐝🤣
